What is Penetrant Testing?

Penetrant testing (PT) is a nondestructive testing method used to detect surface defects in various materials, including metals (such as steel, aluminum alloy, magnesium alloy, and copper alloy) and non-metals (like plastic and ceramics). This technique is particularly effective for identifying surface cracks and other openings that may compromise the integrity of a component.

Importance of Detecting Surface Cracks

During the manufacturing and operational phases of industrial products, micro-cracks as small as a few tenths of a micrometer can develop on surfaces. Research in fracture mechanics indicates that these tiny cracks can lead to significant failures under extreme working conditions.

Understanding the Testing Process

In the images provided, you will see examples of penetrant testing applied to a copper gate valve. It’s important to note that the crack observed in the casting inlet is not an actual defect in the valve body; rather, it is a normal occurrence during the casting process.
After processing the casting inlet, we will conduct another round of penetrant testing to confirm that there are no cracks on the valve body’s surface. If any cracks are detected during our inspections, we will promptly scrap those castings to maintain our commitment to quality.
